Service Day

Buenos Dias Cincinnati, from warm, sunny Costa Rica!  Today can only be described as crazy.  We woke up to a beautiful sunrise after a night of rain.  For breakfast, Jackie made delicious scrambled eggs, toast and a gorgeous plate of fresh fruit.  Briefly after, we left for the library to learn about a local environmental organization (ASCONA).  After that, we visited a local school and gave them our donations that we previously collected.  WE inadvertently started a volleyball game and had lots of fun.  we hopped back on the bus and started towards a school in the mountains.  After a little while driving our bus driver Marvin couldn't get to the top of the hill.  We decided to ditch the bus and walk to our destination a little bit down the road.  With the help of some local Costa Ricans we were able to get to the school with ease.  Once we arrived at the school  we started painting.  By the the time we finished the painting it started to rain.  WE quickly walked to where we had lunch and enjoyed beans and rice on a gigantic banana leaf.  When we finish our lunch we looked through an artistic gift shop and found many cute little items.  After that, we headed back to the bus.  The walk to the bus was a short 20 minutes.  The air conditioning in the bus was the best thing we could hope for.  When we arrived at the lodge, Jackie set out a delicious plate of chips and various sauces.  The dinner, as usual, was delicious.  The rest of the night was peaceful.  Adios amigos and please comment because we read them every night and we love hearing form you!

  1. Cameron, Quinn and Doodie, thanks for the day's highlights, look forward to reading them each night. Each day is so different but so filled with such fun.
The warmth sounds so welcoming.....it was yet another very, very cold day here. SMS was delayed for 2 hours and it was maybe -10 when I dropped Clayton for school. It didn't warm up a lot though, but somewhat sunny and grey.
We decided to go to Dewey's for the first Friday in Lent.....only a short hour long wait for dinner.
Cameron, Ben and Alexandra, you all will have to be cheering on your brother's - the 6th grade team plays tomorrow at 2, as they start their first round of tournament and certainly hoping to win, to go on to the next round on Sunday! Go Cougars! The boys are quite excited.
Cameron, I'm going to have to brush up on some of those dinners you have been eating, so that we can serve them here.
Enjoy your rest tonight and your day tomorrow and will look forward to what fun you have in store for tomorrow. Adios for now!
Love and prayers - Mom -.....

  5. Hello Fellow Costa Ricans,

Hope everyone is having fun! The 2014 Costa Rica Trip have gathered to remember our fun trip! We have some tips to give you.

*when we first tried to post this, the first half deleted so HERE WE GO.

    1. Talk to everyone. Shoutout to Jackie and Joey for always talking to us. It felt like home whenever she cooked for us. Even a simple gesture, like making your bed helps. Talk to and get close to your grade. You will cherish these memories for a lifetime. The next months may feel like you don't like anyone in your class, but enjoy it. We all told ourselves that we weren't going to miss anyone from our grade, but on graduation night, you couldn't stop us from crying. 9 years is a lot of time, so cherish every moment of the last few months. We sure did.

    2. Take everything in. The memories will last but only if you make the best of them. Try not to cry about spiders, they get smaller the farther you go from the equator. Try the food, even if you don't like Jackie's fabulous tamales (I mean, like who doesn't?!?!?!? they were super good! Love you Jackie!) Chipotle isn't as good as the authentic stuff Jackie is cooking! Cuddle with the hermit crabs (not the big ones, the smaller ones are easier to handle) Find a dead scorpion (shoutout to Sleepy!) Thank Marvin for all his service. He doesn't give the bus a piggy back ride for nothing. Thank Joey. (Thanks Joey! Loved the pineapple! Yum!) Enjoy the coffee. Thanks to Costa Rica, the majority of us are now hooked. Guess that was like that one experience for you in Africa, Miss Kelly! :) Cuddle with the Halloween crabs, they may climb the trees, but they sure are friendly! Sing in the shower, when you're scared... I Have Confidence in Sunshine... in the bus, EVERYWHERE. Who else can say they sang a song on the Osa Peninsula?! #checkedoffthebucketlist! Just make the moments count because you will miss them!

We all love Costa Rica and we hope you have a great time. We miss you Aunt Randy and Captain Morgan!

    Pura Vida,

Cate Marx, Merritt Reese, Rose Hofstetter, Annaliese Andsager, Kate Juliani, Caroline Farrell, Claudia Como, and Avery Walter

Kate says take lots of pictures! She took 974 and still enjoys them!

Avery says make the most of the last days! You will miss it! Drink lots of the soda down there! Drink the good stuff; Coca Cola Lite is the best!

Cate says don't take anything for granted, thank your parents.

Annaliese says to enjoy the beach because all you'll see is snow.

Merritt and Caroline say WEAR SUNSCREEN; Caroline's skin peeled for at least a month after. Do yourself a favor and lather it on.

Rose says don't be scared of anything. The spiders are big but they are nothing to be scared about. I'm happy to report that within a month back I was able to run away from a ladybug without screaming. #progress

Claudia says the Halloween crabs are vicious critters but they do have hearts. Check your shoes daily, some may have had children overnight like mine did but that's part of the experience.

  6. Hi Kate -- Great job painting in the service project. When you get back you can paint the wall with the color that we picked for your new room, which is upstairs with your brothers. Jonathan has taken over what used to be your room for his server farm. Keep having fun and and work on those painting skills.

We're all cooped up in the house right now, while we get 8+ inches of snow. The boys and I had a giant snowball fight. When we shoveled the driveway, the pile grew to be higher than Andrew's head. It will definitely be around for a long time. We love you and miss you!
